Tributes paid to boxer Stefan Sanderson who has passed away aged 31

Tributes have been paid to a popular boxer who has passed away aged 31.

Stefan Sanderson, from Johnstone, was a product of the Dennistoun McNair gym.

His manager Sam Kynoch announced his passing, adding: "RIP Stefan Sanderson.

"Our thoughts are with Stefan’s family and friends at this time.

"We will miss him and will always remember what a proud night it was for him when he claimed the Scottish Title."

Scotland's first female world champion, Hannah Rankin, paid a heartfelt tribute, writing: “RIP to Scottish Super Welterweight champ and @KynochBoxing stablemate Stefan Sanderson. Another life gone too soon.”

Scottish trainer Billy Nelson contributed with: "Woke up to sad news this morning of the passing of Stefan Sanderson a young Scottish boxer. RIP Wee Man."

New York-based pro boxer, Chris Glover, added: “Devastated to hear about the passing of Stefan Sanderson. Had some good laughs over the years. Taken far too young. Sleep tight mate.”

During his time in the ring, the southpaw from Johnstone trained with Scottish boxer Paul Weir in Dubai and signed with management company MTK Global in 2017.

Stefan defeated local rival Colin Kelly in his second professional contest to win the British Challenge super weight belt.

He then went on to win the Scottish Area super-welterweight title in just his fifth fight in September 2018. He became just the eighth person to ever win the title in 44 years.

Head of MTK Global, Danny Vaughan, said: "Sad news to wake up to of the passing of Stefan Sanderson today. RIP mate."
