Tributes paid to Bohs legend Derek 'Mono' Monaghan following death

Tributes have been paid to Bohs legend Derek 'Mono' Monaghan following his death.

Derek, fondly known by fans as Mono, was known across the club not only as a lifelong fan but as the man who ran the bars at Dalymount. His face would be known to regulars of Dalymount Park and considered one of the key employees for Bohemian FC.

Many took to social media to pay respects to Cabra man Derek who had been helping to prepare the grounds in recent days along with other club staff. One Up Top Podcast posted a touching tribute to Mono and said he will be "missed by everyone".

They said: "We are devastated to hear of the passing of our friend, father, husband, and Bohs legend Mono Derek better known as Mono ran the bars at Bohs, lived his dream of working for the club he loved so much. He was a face you would know you'd see each week in Dalymount.

Derek was a true Bohs man, speaking with a board member last week he described him as the "most important employee in Bohs" but Mono wasn't just an employee he was a gypsy through & through. He was a former guest on this podcast and we had a first class relationship with him.

"There's not enough words to do Mono justice All we can say is you'll be missed by everyone in red & black R.I.P Mono."

Many shared memories online of Derek who was not only a dedicated Bohs fan but a fan of WWE and was known for his DJ skills. One person even remembered seeing him in the front row of Wrestlemania several years ago.

They said: "Grew up with Mono. He was the best DJ at the cabra summer project. He absolutely loved WWE. Member seeing him on the telly front row at wrestlemania and losing my shit. Dj'd my 21st in the players bar years ago. Love to all his family. Bohs hero. RIP Derek."

Another added: "Absolutely shocked at the tragic news this evening of the passing of Derek Monaghan. The amount of work he put in behind the scenes went way above what was expected. He will be sorely, sorely missed around the club he loved so much. RIP Mono."

It's the second sad loss in as many days for the club following the passing of Martin Poole of BizPrint Printing in Dalymount Lane, who was remembered by the club as a valued neighbour who was always kind to fans. A book of condolence for Martin is available on the Bohemian FC website.
