Tributes paid to Blyth councillor Olga Potts who served 'the town she loved'

Tributes have been paid to a former Blyth mayor who dedicated a huge amount of time to the 'town she loved'.

Long-serving Blyth Town Councillor Olga Potts died on August 16 at the age of 72 following a short battle with cancer.

Coun Potts first became a councillor in 1973 for Cramlington East and later represented Blyth Valley in Croft and Plessey.

She served on the town council since its creation in 2009 and represented the Isabella ward for more than a decade.

Coun Potts was chair of many council committees and proudly became Mayor of Blyth in 2014.

Former Mayor of Blyth and Olga’s husband, John said: "Olga was a very well-known and respected figure in Blyth and I would like to thank all those who have sent messages of condolence, it is very much appreciated."

Very much a community person, she was involved in several organisations including the Labour and Cooperative Movement and Blyth History Societ.

She was on the board of the Isabella Community Centre as well as being a volunteer litter picker.

Mayor of Blyth Warren Taylor said: "Everyone across the council was deeply saddened to learn of the death of Olga.

"She was a longstanding councillor who had served Blyth for many years dedicating a huge amount of time to the town she loved."
