A much-loved lollipop man at a Blantyre primary school has died.
Robert McPolland, of Burnbank, Hamilton, passed away suddenly in the early hours of Sunday, June 7, at home.
He was the school crossing patroller at David Livingstone Memorial Primary in Blantyre and was adored by pupils and their families alike.
The 75-year-old had held his post at the school for the last six years, often dishing out sweets to the children at the end of the school day and always crossing them over the road with a smile.
David Livingstone Memorial Primary’s head teacher Linda Callender paid tribute to Robert and said: “Robert was loved by everyone associated with the school: staff, parents and, of course, the children.
“For many years, his cheery wave and quick wit brought a smile to everyone’s faces as he helped to keep all of the children safe as they crossed the road in the morning and after school.
“He also paid regular visits to our nursery and primary one classes, in particular, to talk about his job and what he did to support members of our school community.
“Our sincere sympathy goes out to his wife and other members of his family at this sad time.”
Robert is survived by his wife Nancy, children Mark and Tracy, and grandchildren Calum and Cian and he was father-in-law to John and Liz.
Family friend Angela Crookston, a parent of a child at David Livingstone Memorial Primary, and a few other mums have organised a JustGiving page to help the family towards the funeral costs.
She told the Advertiser: “Robert was a very well known and popular man from Burnbank and the much-loved lollipop man at David Livingstone Memorial Primary School.
“Everyone adored him and he will be sadly missed at the school.

No funeral arrangements have been made at present but it is likely Robert will be laid to rest in July following a post-mortem.
