Tributes paid to "absolute gentlemen" found dead in double tragedy at city flat

Police are continuing to investigate the deaths of two men who were found at a flat in Cowane Street, Stirling, on Friday.

William Haney, 55, and Robert Cummings, 62, were discovered at the city centre address at around 12noon.

Police say their deaths are being treated as unexplained, however there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances.

As part of the investigation, a 30-year-old man was arrested in connection with offences under the Misuse of Drugs Act, however he has been released pending further enquiries.

SGN, who investigate problems with gas networks in Scotland, were called to the property on Friday afternoon.

Police later reassured that there was no risk to the wider public.

It’s understood that both men were supported by a city centre soup kitchen project, set up initially over the festive season by a group of volunteers including Bannockburn ward councillor Alasdair MacPherson.

Councillor MacPherson said: “I knew both of these gentlemen very well.

“This is tragic news, my thoughts are with the families of William and Robert, both were regular visitors to the soup kitchen and were warm, witty and absolute gentlemen who will be sadly missed by everyone who knew them.”

In January this year, the Observer reported how the Stirling Christmas Cheer soup kitchen volunteers were left shaken by the sudden deaths of three people they helped over Christmas.

The deaths of Mr Haney and Mr Cummings takes the tragic toll of deaths of those who have approached the soup kitchen to five since the turn of the year.

The project, which intends to return to the city centre later this year, last month said the vast majority of those who had approached them lived in homeless accommodation in Stirling, and asked that they be treated with “far more respect and compassion” by wider society.

They added: “Unsurprisingly, they treated us with suspicion at the start of the project, but that has long gone. We will continue to support them going forward, in the background.

“They are our fellow human beings and we feel strongly that attitudes towards them need to change and not just public attitude.”

Detective Inspector Craig Higgins, from Stirling CID, said: “Our thoughts remain with the families of the two men at this time.

“I am aware that there has been a lot of speculation around these deaths and I’d like to thank the community for their patience and understanding as we carry out our enquiries. I’d like to reassure people that these deaths are not believed to be suspicious and there is no threat to the wider public.”

Anyone with any information which could assist the enquiry is being urged to contact police on 101, quoting incident 1410 of April 2, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
