Tributes paid as 'lovely' woman tragically killed in Cork crash named locally

Tributes are being paid to a woman who died after she was hit by a vehicle in Co Cork on Tuesday morning.

The woman, named locally as Esther Barrett, was killed while walking on Greenane Street Lower in Kanturk yesterday.

The collision occurred at around 8.15am and Ms Barrett, who was in her 60s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Diversions were in place for a time yesterday after gardai closed the road to allow for forensic collision investigators to carry out a technical examination.

No one else was injured in the incident.

"I was very saddened to hear of Esther's passing in such tragic circumstances. She was a cousin of mine," he told the Irish Mirror.

"She was very much part of the Town of Kanturk - you would always see her out around the town or helping with the Tidy Towns.

"She will be missed greatly by all who knew her".

Fellow councillor for the Kanturk-Mallow area, Bernard Moynihan, added that Ms Barrett was "a lovely lady".

The Fianna Fail representative said: "She was a lovely lady, very much Kanturk, and did a lot of work with the Tidy Towns.

"She was a real Kanturk person and very liked in the community."

Kanturk Men's Shed also paid tribute to Ms Barrett and offered their condolences to her family.

They said she could often be seen around the town keeping the place clean and tidy and spent "many an evening giving up her time to help keep this beautiful town clean and tidy".

"As a neighbour, Esther was willing to help out anytime her assistance was called on and will be missed here in Greenane. Rip Esther, may you be welcomed into heaven with all our best wishes," they added.

A notice on RIP.ie reads that Ms Barrett, who was from Harte-Barry Place in Greenane, was a "beloved daughter of the late Patrick and Julia Barrett" and will be "sadly missed by her loving sister, brothers, sisters in law, brother in law, nieces, nephews, kind neighbours, relatives and friends".

Her funeral will take place on Friday at 1.30pm in St John the Baptist Church, Ballyclough, followed by private cremation in the Island Crematorium, Ringaskiddy.
