Tributes paid after Munster development officer John O'Neill passes away

Tributes have poured in after the passing of Munster Rugby development officer John O'Neill.

The Munster Rugby community is in mourning after O'Neill, who also played for the province in the 1980's, died following an illness.

He played at centre for the province in their 1984 test against Australia in Thomond Park and has also lined out for Ireland A -scoring a try against Scotland.

O'Neill rejoined the province in 2007 as a coach and worked as development officer as well as Junior Head Coach for a number of years.

His home club Waterpark RFC also paid tribute, and have cancelled all training today as a mark of respect.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of our colleague and friend John O’Neill," Munster CEO Ian Flanagan said.

“Johnno leaves his mark thanks to the work he carried out on behalf of the province and the relations he forged with staff and volunteers across the rugby and sporting community in Waterford and beyond.

“My heartfelt sympathies go to Trish, Cathy and Johnno’s extended family and network of friends at this time.”

Waterpark RFC said: "“It is with great sadness that we learned today of the death of rugby great John O’Neill RIP. We wish to extend our sincere condolences to his wife Trish, daughter Cathy and all the extended O’Neill family.”

“As a player with Waterpark and in his training role with Munster Rugby John was a great friend to Waterpark and many of our member have been sharing fond memories of him today, he will be greatly missed."
