Two brave gardai confronted a blood-drenched man after reports a .
The woman, named locally as Skaidrite Valdgeima, 34, was visiting Dublin and staying in the Aparto Binary Hub in the Liberties area.
Sources have said the mother of three, who lived in Blessington, Co Wicklow, was attacked by a man she knew who she was in the hostel with at the time.
A source added: “This poor woman was stabbed and beaten by her attacker, apparently with a fire extinguisher.
“Before she died she was calling for help, banging on doors.
“He ran from the scene. A man was apprehended a short distance away by two unarmed gardai on Bridgefoot Street near the south quays.
“The two unarmed gardai tackled the man, who was covered in blood.
“They knocked him to the ground and handcuffed him.” The horrific stabbing was apparently witnessed by a number of people and there is understood to be extensive CCTV footage of the incident.

The arrested man is in custody in Kevin Street and is understood to be a Latvian national.
Skaidrite is also believed be from the Baltic nation but gardai are examining the possibility that she may be Lithuanian.
The news of the brutal murder has shocked her colleagues at Word Perfect Translations.
Rebecca O’Sullivan said staff were devastated to hear of the murder of the “lovely and friendly” co-worker.
She added: “She was an absolute model employee and fantastic person. We were trying to contact her as we had an assignment for her.
“She was also looking forward to getting her citizenship later this week.
“We are just in total shock. She was a very hard worker and always willing to take on any task we gave her.
“She lived for her children and her family. We would all like to extend our deepest sympathies to Skaidrite family.
“We want to set up a GoFundMe account for her family to help them – it is just completely horrific.”


Aparto, which manages the hostel, said last night: “Our thoughts are very much with the family and loved ones of the victim of this tragic incident and we extend our deepest condolences to all concerned.
“We are currently liaising with the gardai and will continue to assist in any way possible with the investigation under way.
“We are not in a position to make any further comment at this time.”
A Garda spokesman added: “Gardai in Kevin Street are investigating an incident in which a female received a number of injuries in an apartment in Bonham St area of Dublin 8 in the early hours of this morning, Wednesday, June 26, at approximately 3.40am.
“The female, in her 30s, was taken to St James’s Hospital where she was pronounced dead a short time later.”
