Tributes paid after Kilkenny legend Liam 'Chunky' O'Brien passes away

Tributes have poured in following the death of Kilkenny hurling great Liam 'Chunky' O'Brien.

A four-time All-Ireland winner with Kilkenny, O'Brien established himself in the side at the beginning of the 1970's and the Cats' midfield soon became a force to be reckoned with as he and Frank Cummins formed a fantastic partnership.

O'Brien won his first Leinster medal for Kilkenny in 1971, but All-Ireland success evaded the Cats that year as Tipperary thwarted them in the decider. The next year, however, Kilkenny got back to the final to defeat Cork and give O'Brien his first All-Ireland medal.

Despite losing out to Limerick in 1973's All-Ireland final, 'Chunky's' performances in the championship earned him his first All-Star.

Kilkenny again recovered from their setback and went on to claim back-to-back All-Ireland titles in 1974 and 1975, with O'Brien himself notching back-to-back All-Stars along the way.

It wasn't until 1979 that O'Brien would win his fourth and final All-Ireland with Kilkenny, this time lining out at wing-forward as Kilkenny defeated Galway. He subsequently won his fourth and final All-Star at the wing-forward position, having earned three already in the midfield position.

On top of all of his achievements at inter-county level, he was named Texaco Hurler of the Year in 1975.

O'Brien also had great success with his club James Stephens, winning four county titles, two Leinster titles and two All-Irelands at club level in 1975 and 1982.
