Tributes paid after former All-Ireland final referee PJ McGrath dies aged 79

Former All-Ireland final referee PJ McGrath has passed away at the age of 79.

McGrath was part of the Mayo senior football panel in the mid 1960's before going on to become a respected official and administrator.

McGrath took charge of the 1982 All-Ireland final as Kerry's quest for five-in-a-row was ended by a late Offaly goal by Seamus Darby.

He also refereed All-Ireland minor finals and contested the 2002 GAA President election, losing out to Sean Kelly.

The GAA community have paid tribute to the Kilmaine clubman as Mayo GAA released a statement.

A statement read: "Mayo GAA are saddened to learn the passing of PJ McGrath Kilmaine GAA. PJ was a member of the Mayo Senior panel in the mid-60's before he took up refereeing at club and national level.

"He refereed the 1982 All-Ireland Senior Final he also refereed two All-Ireland Minor Finals. Over his time he served as President of the Connaught Council(1994-1996) he was Chairman of the Mayo County Board (1997-2002).

"PJ was nominated to contest the position of Uachtaran C.L.G. He was also Chairman of the National Referee's Committee. Mayo GAA County Board wish to extend their condolences to the McGrath Family. Ar Dheis De Go Raibh Anam".
