Tributes left for 'dearly missed dad' who died in Newsham Park

Tributes have been left to a 'dearly missed dad' and 'dear brother' who died in Newsham Park last month.

Former labourer Gary Scarth, 41, was found unconscious by a nurse on her way to work at 8am on April 25. The nurse began to give him CPR while another walker spotted the two and immediately called 999. Gary was taken to hospital but was sadly pronounced dead shortly after.

An area of the park in Old Swan was decorated by Gary's sister Georgia Ferguson. She left balloons, family photographs, flowers and a wooden plaque with a replica of the top of Anfield's Shankly Gates attached. The plaque also features the message: "Gary Scarth 08/12/1980 - 25/04/2022 Always in our hearts. You'll Never Walk Alone."

Georgia previously told told the ECHO : “We were always having a laugh, he was a very happy and loving person. He would do anything for his family and friends.

“Gary was a big Liverpool fan and when there were big games on we would always have parties at my house. He was loved by so many people and they are all welcome to attend his funeral when we get him home.”

Among the tributes left at the park is a card addressed to "a dearly missed dad", while another says "we didn't get to say goodbye." A card left on a bouquet of flowers says: "We will love and miss you" as well as one which reads: "In loving memory of a dear brother. Going to miss you so much, love you always." A child's dummy has also been left above a photograph of Gary.

According to Georgia, Gary left a friend’s house on April 24, to meet his son in the city centre. At the time, he was carrying two JD bags – one black and the other yellow – a pocket full of change and his mobile phone.

But when the 41-year-old dad was found he only had the cash on him. Gary also had cuts on his head and markings above his nose, according to his sister.

Emergency services attended the scene after receiving reports that a man had suffered a medical episode in the park. He was taken to hospital but was sadly pronounced dead. Merseyside Police stated that his death was not being treated as suspicious.
