Tributes for young Edinburgh dad who died in horror bike crash with van

Tributes have flooded in for a "much loved" nurse and young father of two kids after he was killed in a road traffic incident.

James Harrison, 36, died following the collision on Mount Vernon Road at around 8:45am on Thursday 25 June.

It's believed that his bike may have collided with a Mercedes Sprinter van at the crossroads junction between Mount Vernon Road and Gilmerton Road, Police Scotland said at the time.

NHS Lothian have paid tribute to their "well respected" colleague who they said had volunteered in the intensive care unit in recent months to help respond to the coronavirus pandemic.

Professor Alex McMahon, executive director of nursing , midwifery and allied healthcare professionals at NHS Lothian said, “It is with great sadness that we learned of the death of our colleague James Harrison. James was a much loved and well respected member of the NHS Lothian team working as a lead Research Nurse in Cardiology.

“In recent months, James volunteered in our Intensive Care Unit to support the COVID-19 response, demonstrating his enduring commitment, compassion and determination to support both patients and staff.

“James will be truly missed by all the colleagues he worked alongside, and by the wider research community here in Lothian and across Scotland.

“From everyone at NHS Lothian, we offer our heartfelt condolences to the Harrison family. Our thoughts are with James’s wife and two young children at this truly difficult time.”

The health board said it was working to ensure support was available for those who had been impacted by the news.

James was also recognised as a accomplished athlete and official for Scottish Athletics

A tribute posted on the Scottish Athletics Facebook page by team mate Alastair Brockie said: "Not only was James a committed Scottish Athletics official, he was an active and successful athlete, part of the Corstorphine team winning the 2018 National Road Relays, and the 2019 East District Cross Country championships.

"He was also team manager for our Men's League team and an inspiration to our young squad of athletes.

"James is someone who put far more into the sport than he took out. He will be sorely missed by all at Corstorphine and far beyond."

Anyone who thinks they may be able to help with information related to the incident is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 1312 of 26 June.
