Tributes flow for Olympic champion after death on mountain

  • German biathlete and double Olympic champion Laura Dahlmeier, 31, has died following a mountaineering accident in Pakistan.
  • Dahlmeier was hit by sudden rockfall on Monday while attempting to summit the 6,094-metre Laila Peak in the Gilgit-Baltistan province.
  • Despite search efforts by two expert climbing teams and a helicopter, no signs of life were found, and her death was confirmed by rescue teams.
  • Dahlmeier, who won two gold medals at the 2018 Winter Olympics, had retired from biathlon in 2019 at the age of 25.
  • The German Olympic Sports Confederation said she was “someone with heart, attitude and vision”, while the Bavarian premier said she “epitomised her native Bavaria in the best sense of the word”.
