Tributes flow for Ian McDonnell who died after trying to stop Clondalkin car robbery

Tributes have been flowing in for a 50-year-old man who died after trying to stop his car being stolen.

He was run over by his own car while attempting to foil its theft at his business premises last Sunday.

Ian McDonnell was carried on the bonnet of the vehicle to where he was discovered with the car quickly fleeing the scene of the crime.

He was found with life threatening injuries at around 6:15pm on Robinhood Road, Clondalkin and was rushed to Tallaght hospital.

He sadly died from his injuries yesterday evening.

The whole Clondalkin community has been left in shock by the Roscommon native's sudden death.

Local Independent councillor said that the community was reeling from the horrific news and encouraged witnesses to come forward.

He said: "I was very sorry to hear of the awful death of Mr McDonnell while trying to stop a car thief stealing his property.

"Anyone with any information should contact the guards. I send my sympathies to his wife, children and extended family and friends who must be in shock of his untimely death."

Cllr William Joseph Carey sent his condolences to Ian's loved ones.

He said: "I'm shocked.

"It seems to be a trend that's resuming from the eighties and nineties of cars being stolen.

"I'm just shocked."

Horrified locals took to Facebook to pay tribute to to the father-of-three.

One person said: "Living can be so cruel , rest in peace Ian."

Another said: "Rest in peace Ian.

"It was a pleasure to have known you -always there to help out.

"A true gentleman, a good friend."

Investigations are now ongoing after the stolen car was found on Limekiln Green, Greenhills, Dublin 12 yesterday.

Gardai say a second vehicle involved in the incident was stolen in Crumlin last Sunday and was located burnt out in Ballinascorney, Tallaght on Tuesday.

Both cars are being forensically examined with gardai appealing for witnesses to come forward.

A garda spokeswoman said: “Gardai are anxious to hear from anyone who may have been in the Robinhood Road area of Clondalkin on the evening of Sunday 23 January between 5:30pm and 7:00pm and who may have witnessed any activity which drew their attention or who may have any video dash cam footage.
