Tributes flow for Dublin man who was 'pioneer of martial arts' following death

A Dublin man who travelled the world promoting martial arts has been hailed as a 'pioneer' of the sport following his death last Friday.

Barney Coleman from Ormond Square in Dublin 7 was known for opening High Street Kenpo Karate Academy in the Liberties in 1971, welcoming in students eager to learn karate and it remains the oldest Kenpo school in the world. He sadly passed away on Friday, 19 August surrounded by his loving family.

Barney also collaborated with martial arts expert Ed Parker, who was known for teaching Elvis Presley karate. Barney trained under John McSweeney, who brought kenpo to Ireland and Europe.

Barney's brother John paid tribute to his beloved brother, telling Dublin Live: "Barney helped promote karate and kickboxing and other arts in the MMA world. He was the driving force behind all the top associations in Ireland.

"He trained in High Street up to the day he had his stroke in 2018," added Paul. He explained that High Street is still owned by the Coleman family, with Paul and his sons Tadhg and Oisin now running the popular karate club.

Barney also worked as a bus driver for Dublin Bus for over 40 years. His brother Paul said: "He was the first man to drive the one man bus in Dublin. He is one of the most well-known characters and it is the end of an era.

"He will be sadly missed by everyone he knew. His name will be carried on by his loving children, grandchildren, nephews, nieces, and all his family and friends."

Taking to social media, former students and friends of Barney thanked him for his contribution to the karate world. One person wrote: "True legend. Rest In Peace Barney thinking of all of you.

A second person wrote: "Rip Barney, lovely man, thoughts and prayers are with you all." A third added: "A true gent. RIP."

A fourth person commented: "Barney was a good man and great kenpoist and martial artist. He was always very kind to me. Sincere condolences to you all. RIP."

A notice on RIP.ie reads: "Coleman, Barney, 19th August 2022 (Ormond Square, Dublin 7 and formerly of Dublin Bus and High Street Kenpo Karate Club), surrounded by his loving family at Millbrook Manor Nursing Home, Saggart.
