Tributes flow for 100-year-old Wicklow World War 2 hero who passed away

Tributes have poured in for a former WW2 Royal Air Force captain who passed away this week.

Captain Bill Leckie, who turned 100 this year, died peacefully at his home in Wicklow.

Bill was one of the last living heavy bomber captains, and was heavily involved in key S.O.E. operations.

He retired a heavily-decorated servant for his gallantry.

Irish Air Corps, the Royal British Legion Republic of Ireland, and the Ambassador of Poland to Ireland all paid tribute to the former RAF pilot.

Irish Air Corps shared a photo from Bill’s 100th birthday with the message: “We were very saddened to learn this news. @GOCAirCorps seen here recently meeting Flt Lt RETD Bill Leckie on the occasion of his 100th birthday. From all @IrishAirCorps, ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam”

Others took to Twitter to share their condolences.

One person wrote: “RIP. One of a unique generation whose bravery and sacrifice should never be forgotten.”

Another said: “Sad news! The last of the greatest generation! Not many left”

The war hero was originally from Troon, Scotland, and was surrounded by his loving family in Enniskerry at the time of his death.

The funeral service will take place on Saturday October 9 at 12.30pm in St. Patrick’s Church, Enniskerry followed by committal at Mount Jerome Crematorium, Harolds Cross, Dublin 6W at 4.00pm.
