Tributes flood in for Liverpool FC fan dad who died with wife by his side

Tributes have flooded in for dad-of-two who died before he got the chance to complete his bucket list of wishes.

Darren Smyth, who was a huge Liverpool FC fan, was in his 20s when he was diagnosed with a rare type of cancer called neuroendocrine carcinoma.

The 36-year-old, from Belfast, had undergone numerous rounds of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, before the cancer spread to his lungs and spine.

He died at Northern Ireland Hospice in the early hours of Monday, April 12, with his wife Jenna by his side.

Paying tribute, his wife Jenna told Belfast Live: "It was just too much for him.

"He had all the will in the world, but his body just had no fight left. At the end he was in a lot of pain."

Back in 2018, Darren penned a bucket list of 30 things he dreamed of doing with his wife Jenna and two sons before the end.

One ECHO reader, who goes by "Brendy1975", said: "Rest In Peace Darren. YNWA"

Airshot said: "RIP Darren your pain is over, our thoughts and prayers to your family."

More comments came in on Facebook offering condolences to the family.

Julia Cooke said: "Condolences to all his family. May he rest in peace"

Theresa Shah said: "May he rest in peace bless the family"

Marie Townsend said: "So sorry for your loss Too young and Too soon"

Kim Warne said: "RIP YNWA"

Darren told Belfast Live just a few weeks ago: "Things have been up and down, good and bad. Haven’t really had a chance to do anything re: the bucket list due to Covid restrictions."

He also said his health had been "up and down" and that he had been "in hospital quite a bit".

But even then he was hopeful.

He added: "They actually told Jenna to prepare for the worst and that I wouldn’t be coming home as I wasn’t getting better... but they eventually figured out the right treatment and things turned around.

"Lockdown hasn’t been easy either," he added. "But I’ve been doing lotto raffles for charity to fill my time. It's kept me sane."
