Tributes flood in as four-year-old Irish boy who died in fall at home named locally

Tributes have been flooding in after the tragic death of a four-year-old Irish boy.

Mason O’Connell tragically passed away after sustaining head injuries at his house in Rathbane, Co Limerick last Saturday.

The youngster was rushed to hospital in Limerick and Cork before being brought to Temple Street Children's Hospital in Dublin, where he sadly passed away on Tuesday.

Mason's family are understood to be originally from the Castleconnell area, and local councillor Seán Hartigan said the tragedy had left the community in shock.

He told the Irish Daily Mirror: "The family are well respected and very friendly people, there would hardly be a person in Castleconnell who wouldn't be connected to them in some way or who wouldn't know some of the family.

"There's a great deal of sadness in the area, everyone is very upset. Mason was well-known around the village, it's a big loss."

Meanwhile gardai said yesterday that they are "investigating all circumstances" surrounding the incident, and that a post mortem will be carried out at a later date.

A spokesman said: "Gardaí at Roxboro Road, Limerick, are investigating all the circumstances surrounding an incident where a male child (4 years) suffered fatal injuries at a house in Rathbane, Limerick on Saturday, 13th March 2021.

“The boy passed away at Children’s Hospital Ireland at Temple Street earlier today, Tuesday 16th March 2021.”

And a GoFundMe has also been launched to help give Mason "the send off he deserves", with nearly €8,000 already raised.

The fundraiser reads: "As a lot of you may know, Mason has battled between Cork Hospital & Temple Street since Saturday when he received a life threatening injury due to a fall.

"Mason has since unfortunately lost his battle at the young age of 4. We are helping to raise money to give him the send off he deserves.

"Times are so tough for people but nothing compares to what his family are going through. Let's all come together and make things that little bit easier for them. Every little helps."
