Tributes as 'beloved' Roxette singer Marie Fredriksson dies aged 61

Roxette singer Marie Fredriksson has died at the age of 61, her family have confirmed.

The Swedish popstar died on Monday morning following a "long illness."

Marie's family wrote in a statement: "Marie Fredriksson is most mourned by her husband Mikael Bolyos and their two children.

"It is with great sadness that we have to announce that one of our biggest and most beloved artists is gone. Marie Fredriksson died on the morning of December 9 in the suites of her previous illness."

Marie co-created Roxette in 1986 with Per Gessle and are best known for the tracks  It Must Have Been Love and Listen To Your Heart amongst many others.

The pop duo scored countless number one albums and sold more than 75million records around the world.

Paying tribute to his co-star, Per tweeted: "Time goes by so fast. It feels like just recently when Marie and I were sitting in my little apartment in Halmstad sharing dreams.

"And what a fantastic dream we got to share!

"I'm honoured to have met your talent+generosity. All my love goes to you+your family."

The 60-year-old ended his message: "Things will never be the same."

Fans have also been flooding social media to express their sadness at the news.

"RIP Marie Fredriksson of Roxette. Amazing woman and a brilliant catalogue of songs," tweeted one.

Another commented: "RIP Marie Fredriksson of Roxette. thank you for your music , you will never be forgotten."

"#Roxette' s songs were the soundtrack of my teenage life #RIPMarieFredriksson. Thank you for the inspiration and your music," added a third.

A final comment read: "She made so many lives better with her singing. She will be missed."

The family added in their statement that Marie will be buried quietly with only the closest family present.
