Tributes are paid to Hamilton swimming coach Robert Fitzgerald

Tributes have been paid after a stalwart of the Hamilton swimming scene passed away.

Robert Fitzgerald, fondly known as ‘Mr Fitz’ was a member of Hamilton Baths ASC for almost 40 years. He coached right up until his death at 83.

He was so fondly remembered that condolences have been received by the club from as far away as Australia and China.

Mr Fitzgerald was said to be able to recognise individual swimmers from their stroke technique.

Hamilton Baths head coach Ann O’Neill, who said the club were “devastated” by the news, led the tributes.

She said: “Bob began helping at the swimming club as a parent helper, Scottish Swimming official, and then as a coach to our young people.

“He has successfully coached every young swimmer in our club for almost all of that time and, without his input, we would not have the success we have today.

“His ability to coach technique is recognised throughout the West of Scotland. One official commented recently that he always recognised a Hamilton swimmer in a competition because of their stroke technique.

“Bob coached for 11 hours per week and, at the age of 83 years, that is amazing.

“He was the backbone of our swimming club, and many parents bring their children to us because they had a great experience as part of Bob’s groups when they were young.

“The club recognised his value too, and Bob is a Life Member, an award we only give to people who serve the club with distinction.”

Ann continued: “Bob supported and mentored our young coaches, and enabled them to have the confidence and expertise to coach young people towards their achievements.

“He was recognised three years ago for his achievements by both South Lanarkshire Council and sportscotland.

“Our young people have gained success at British, Scottish, West District and local level, and have achieved many medals, which all honour the great work that Bob has done for the club.

“Swimming is not just about the medals, though, and many young people gain success and confidence through their sport.

“Bob nurtured these youngsters, so that they become confident individuals, who show respect to others and who take responsibility for their own development.

“They are resilient and caring individuals, the kind of people who one day may contribute positively to our society.

“Bob was a caring individual, who selflessly worked to develop others. Hundreds of people have been touched by his humour, kindness and passion for helping people, particularly our younger generation.”

Bob’s funeral will be held at South Lanarkshire Crematorium on Saturday, January 4, at 10.15am.
