Tributes after sudden death of Salford councillor

Tributes have been paid to a town hall councillor in Salford after his sudden death.

Salford council announced on Saturday the passing of John Ferguson.

Flags at the town hall in Swinton will be lowered as a mark of respect.

Councillor Ferguson - described by friends and colleagues as a 'stalwart' Labour man and a hugely respected councillor - represented the Pendlebury ward in Salford.

He was the council's lead member for workforce and industrial relations and lived in Pendlebury.

Tributes to him have flooded in.

City mayor Paul Dennett tweeted: "John was a selfless man, hard working and a deeply committed socialist, always fighting for a better and fairer Salford and world.

"He will never be forgotten."

In a statement, Salford council said on Saturday: "It is with great sadness that we are today sharing the news that Councillor John Ferguson has passed away.

Flags will be lowered at Swinton Civic Centre (MEN)

"Councillor Ferguson represented the ward of Pendlebury and was lead member for workforce and industrial relations.

"Our thoughts are with family, friends and colleagues.

"The flags at the civic centre will remain lowered."

No further details have been released.

Coun Richard Critchley, who represents Walkden South for Labour, said on Twitter: "Terribly sad to read about the sudden passing of Cllr John Ferguson, who represented Pendlebury ward on Salford City Council.

"My thoughts and condolences are with his friends and family."

Langworthy Labour councillor John Warmisham called him a 'stalwart' of the Labour Party, a 'lifelong' trade unionist and a respected ward councillor.

"He will be greatly missed," he added on Twitter.
