Tributes after death of Man City honorary president Tudor Thomas

Tributes are being paid to Tudor Thomas, an honorary president of Manchester City Football Club who has died aged 94.

City confirmed the sad news of his passing in a statement today ahead of the Premier League game against Tottenham Hotspur in north London.

Offering their condolences to his friends and family, the club paid tribute to a 'loyal supporter' of the club for more than 70 years and a prominent businessman based in Stockport.

A room named after him at the Eithad Stadium - the Tudor Room - is packed with memorabilia he collected over a lifetime following football and City. The club said he would entertain match officials and scouts there on matchdays.

Mr Thomas was one of four honorary presidents at the club, together with former Manchester council chief executive Sir Howard Bernstein, ex-City captain Tony Brook and solicitor Raymond Donn.

The club paid tribute to his steadfast commitment over the years to City's academy set up and his tireless fundraising for the Blues.

Mr Thomas, who had supported City since the end of the Second World War, established MT Kaill Plant Hire in Stockport and later bought MTK Breaker Hire and Sales. He also had family links to Stockport Hydraulics.

In a statement released today ahead of the Spurs game, the club said: "Manchester City are saddened to report that our Honorary President Tudor Thomas has passed away.

"Tudor was a loyal supporter of the club since just after the Second World War, attending matches with his wife Mary wherever we played.

"At the Tudor Room in the Etihad Stadium, he entertained match officials and scouts on behalf of the club, surrounded by memorabilia that he collected in his 60 years of loyal support.

"He was a prominent businessman in Stockport and a major supporter of the Academy helping fundraising with the Academy for many years.

"The thoughts of everyone at Manchester City are with Tudor’s family and friends. The club will mark his passing at next weekend’s game against Aston Villa." No further details have been revealed.
