Tributes after death of former councillor who served the public for three decades

Tributes are being paid to a political stalwart in Bolton who served as a councillor for more than 30 years.

The Conservative Party has announced the death after an illness of Norman Critchley - a widely respected and long-serving politician in the town.

He was 82.

Mr Critchley was given the title of Honorary Alderman in 2019.

He represented the Bromley Cross ward for the party for more than three decades before retiring from local politics.

Colleagues praised someone who 'always gave his all' for the people of Bromley Cross.

In a statement online, the Bolton Conservative group wrote: "It is with great sadness that we notify you of the sad passing of Alderman Norman Critchley.

"Norman was a stalwart of the Conservative group, respected across all parties.

"He represented Bromley Cross Ward with pride and was dedicated to public service.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.

"Among Norman’s proudest highlights was without doubt his mayoral year with his beloved Delyse by his side as his Mayoress.

"R.I.P Norman from all your friends."

Councillor Nadim Muslim, who represents the Bromley Cross ward for the Conservatives, said on Twitter: "Awful news about Alderman Critchley.

"Norman was a great colleague and gave me plenty of support during my first year as a councillor, for which I will always be grateful.

"He was forever willing to go the extra mile and always gave his all for the people of Bromley Cross ward."

Farnworth-born Mr Critchley, a chartered structural engineer by trade, was first elected to the council in May 1988.

He served as mayor of Bolton in 2009/10 and retired from politics in 2019.
