Tribute to 'true diamond' killed after being hit by car on Boxing Day

Tributes have been paid to a man who died after being hit by a car on Boxing Day. Pedestrian Craig Walding, 37, died at the scene of the collision on the A469 between Llanbradach and Ystrad Mynach at 8.30pm on Monday, December 26.

Gwent Police attended along with personnel from the Welsh Ambulance Service. A 33-year-old man from the Herefordshire area was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He has since been released under investigation.

Mr Walding's family have paid tribute to their "diamond" in a statement released through Gwent Police. They said: "It is with immense sadness that we as a family have to announce the loss of our beloved Craig.

“Craig was a wonderful son, brother, uncle and friend who was loved by so many. He was a true diamond who leaves such a deep hole in all our lives. Words cannot express the pain we are feeling, and we would like to thank everyone for the love and support we have received.”

With permission from the family, Craig's employer Cwm Taf University Health Board shared a touching tribuite to him on social media. It read: "Craig was a much loved member of our smoking cessation team and will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.

"Our thoughts are with Craig’s family members, friends and colleagues at this devastating time and we send our deepest condolences.
His colleagues would like to highlight how much of a pleasure it was to have Craig as part of their team. He was a very kind, caring, unique, special individual - a big character with a heart of gold, a one of a kind who would never fail to make you smile."

His next of kin continue to receive support from specialist officers. Police are now asking for any motorists with dashcam footage that were using the A469 between 7.30pm and 9pm to contact them.
