Tribute plaque to much-loved East Kilbride walker torn down

A memorial plaque in memory of a much-loved East Kilbride walker has been stolen.

The tribute was placed on a bridge at Burnhouse Road in Auldhouse by friends of Brian Reid - a founder member of the Murray12 walkers, which has a regular cohort of about 30 folk.

Brian passed away last September aged 72 and the plaque was put up, with South Lanarkshire Council's permission, in May of this year.

Friend, fellow walker and neighbour of 30 years, Billy McCabe, told Lanarkshire Live : "Who on earth would want to do such a thing?

"We all wanted to do something to remember Brian, so we decided on the wee plaque and got the permission to do it.

"It's just absolutely disgusting that someone has forcibly torn it down and its gone.

"Why tear down a plaque that was doing nobody any harm - it's just the lowest of the low."

"We always walked about the Auldhouse area, not venturing too far, but still getting in a good few miles in.

"Brian loved that particular wee spot - we used to sit down and have a blether on that wall. Or if folk were waiting for others to catch up, we would stop there."

Billy added: "Mind you Brian was such a fit guy, it was such a shock when he died suddenly.

"We used to call him 'Bionic Brian' - he would be powering on ahead and we would be lagging behind complaining about blisters."

"I just hope whoever did this has their conscience pricked - we think it's went sometime between Thursday night when it was seen by walkers and cyclists and Saturday morning.

"We will get another one back up though - they aren't going to stop us having a tribute there."
