Tribute paid to 'well loved' Leeds United fan found dead on beach

A heartfelt tribute has been paid to a 'well-loved' Leeds man who was found dead on a beach near Grimsby.

Gary Simpson went missing after watching his beloved Leeds United play Derby County in the Championship play-off semi-final on Wednesday, May 15 and his body was found on a beach in Cleethorpes two days later.

His sister Anne Simpson told LeedsLive: "I loved him lots and my heart is broken.

"Gary was well loved, a great boxer years ago and he loved Leeds United. He was a good roofer too.

"This has cut my family up and we only lost our mum four years ago. That's all I can say at the moment - he was loved."

The 49-year-old, from Meanwood, had been working as a roofer in Cleethorpes and he went out with a group to watch the Leeds game at a bar on Wednesday night.

After watching his side lose 4-2 at Elland Road, he became separated from the group and was reported missing.

Someone found his body on a beach in Cleethorpes on Friday morning, about 100 metres from shore, and they alerted a passing motorist, who called the emergency services.

Humberside Police have launched an investigation to try and figure out how Gary died.

Detective Sergeant Mick Keech said: "A post-mortem examination and forensic tests have proved inconclusive as to the cause of Mr Simpson’s death.

"Our investigations are obviously still ongoing to ascertain exactly how Mr Simpson died and why he was on the beach, and we are providing regular updates to his family in West Yorkshire."

Anyone with any information should contact police on 101 quoting log number 111 of 17/05/19.
