Nov. 25--A February trial date was set Tuesday for the Chicago man alleged to have driven the getaway vehicle in the robbery and fatal shooting of a Bensenville store clerk in 2014.
Tremayne Davis, 25, is scheduled to stand trial beginning Feb. 16 in DuPage County court for the murder of Hussein Saghir, who was shot outside the tobacco store where he worked during an apparent botched robbery on Jan. 9, 2014.
Authorities say Davis, who is charged with first-degree murder, drove the van in which he and two other men traveled to the Sam's Tobacco and Food Mart on Irving Park Road.
Two of the men, Kenneth Bardlett and Stephan Russell, are alleged to have tried to rob Saghir, 36. The alleged robbers and the clerk ended up outside the store, and police say Russell shot Saghir once before he and Bardlett fled.
The store's security cameras recorded the shooting, and about three weeks after the murder, police arrested Bardlett. In the following days, Davis and Russell were charged in the slaying.
Russell, the alleged shooter, is also awaiting trial, and prosecutors said there is a chance he and Davis could be tried simultaneously.
Bardlett pleaded guilty to a lesser charge shortly after his arrest in a plea deal with prosecutors, and is expected to be sentenced to a 20-year prison term at the conclusion of the cases against Russell and Davis. As part of his agreement, Bardlett must provide truthful testimony against the other two, according to prosecutors.
