Trial of three men in connection with aftermath of Hillsborough tragedy set to begin

The trial of three men facing allegations linked to the aftermath of the Hillsborough tragedy is set to begin today.

Two former South Yorkshire Police officers and a solicitor, who worked with the force, are accused of perverting the course of justice.

Ex-Chief Superintendent Donald Denton, who is 83, former Detective Chief Inspector Alan Foster, aged 74, and 71-year-old Peter Metcalf, who worked with the force following the disaster, deny wrongdoing.

Each of the defendants faces two counts of doing acts tending and intended to pervert the course of public justice.

Their trial will be held at The Lowry in Salford, Greater Manchester, with the arts venue having been converted into a Nightingale court during the coronavirus pandemic.

The trial will be at the Lowry theatre at Salford Quays, which is currently being used as a Nightingale court (The Lowry)

It will be presided over by judge Mr Justice William Davis and follows a criminal investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct.

The prosecution is linked to allegations surrounding changes to police witness statements following the stadium disaster, which unfolded when Liverpool faced Nottingham Forest in an FA Cup semi-final on April 15, 1989.

Ninety six Liverpool supporters died as a result of a tragic crush on the Leppings Lane terrace allocated to them at the Hillsborough stadium in Sheffield.
