Trial linked to aftermath of the Hillsborough tragedy delayed until 2021

A trial focused on allegations surrounding the aftermath of the Hillsborough tragedy is now set to begin in January 2021.

Three men - two former South Yorkshire Police officers and a solicitor who worked with the force - each face a charge of doing acts with intent to pervert the course of public justice.

The accusations are linked to changes made to witness statements following the 1989 stadium disaster.

Ex-Chief Superintendent Donald Denton, former Detective Chief Inspector Alan Foster and Peter Metcalf were due to face a trial starting on April 20 of this year.

Metcalf was the solicitor who acted for South Yorkshire Police during the Taylor Inquiry into the tragedy and the first inquests that then followed.

At a short hearing at Preston Crown Court on Thursday morning, Mr Justice William Davis, the judge set to oversee the trial, ruled it would now begin in January 2021.The adjournment is due to family reasons linked to Foster, whose wife has a serious medical condition.

The allegations surround the aftermath of the disaster, which unfolded when Liverpool faced Nottingham Forest in an FA Cup semi-final on April 15, 1989.

Ninety six Liverpool supporters died as a result of a tragic crush on the Leppings Lane terrace at the Hillsborough stadium in Sheffield.

More details on the reason for the adjournment will follow
