A provisional trial date has been set in the case of two Libyan soldiers accused of raping a man in Cambridge.

The men were among several hundred soldiers on a training mission with the Ministry of Defence in a Cambridgeshire barracks.

Moktar Mahmoud, 33, and Ibrahim Abogutila, 22, were arrested this month and have been charged with raping a man in his 20s in a Cambridge park on 26 October. They appeared in court via a video link on Tuesday and spoke in Arabic to confirm their names.

The two men, appearing from Peterborough prison, gave no plea, said prosecution barrister Sara Walker. Both men, defended by Mark Shelley, were remanded in custody and there was no application for bail.

Judge Haworth gave a provisional date of 5 May for the beginning of the crown court trial which will take place in Cambridge.

Mahmoud and Abogutila were training at Bassingbourn barracks when the crime was alleged to have taken place.
