Trial date set for dad accused of murdering baby son

A trial date has been set for a dad accused of murdering his baby son in Radcliffe.

Zakari William Bennett-Eko died after he was found in the River Irwell near to a bridge on Blackburn Street on September 11.

The 11-month old was retrieved from the water and taken to hospital but he died later.

Zakari's father Zak Eko was arrested shortly after the incident and charged with murder.

He made two court appearances before being detained under the Mental Health Act in October.

Eko, 22, was moved from Forest Bank prison in Salford to a secure hospital.

His trial was initially due to take place in March, but was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

A new trial date has now been set for November 23 when he will appear before jurors at Manchester Crown Court.

He is yet to enter a plea on the murder charge nor on an alternative charge of manslaughter.

Following Zakari's death, tearful mourners left flowers, soft toys and candles at the scene in Radcliffe town centre.

Among the tributes was a large cuddly bear with a card that read: "To a beautiful little boy. Sleep tight little man. Our thoughts are with your family. From all of us at Lidl Radcliffe."

One card with flowers read: "Goodnight and God Bless beautiful innocent boy. Fly high Angel."
