Trey Burton returns to Bears practice, battling groin injury

The Bears have been cautious with tight end Trey Burton, but there’s optimism brewing about his availability against the Broncos.

Burton, who missed the Bears’ season opener against the Packers with a mild groin strain, returned to practice on Monday. Nagy was optimistic about Burton playing on Sunday, but he wasn’t definitive.

“Seeing him out there today, he looked like he was moving around pretty good,” Nagy said Monday. “We want to stay optimistic… and then just kind of feel it out as the days go by and see as the week goes by here really exactly where he’s at.”

Burton hasn’t played in a game since the regular-season finale against the Vikings. He sat out the playoff game against the Eagles with a groin injury, which he had sports hernia surgery to correct in the offseason.

A new groin injury surfaced a week before the Bears’ opener versus the Packers, which forced the tight end to start the 2019 season like he ended last season, on the sideline.

The Bears had a light practice on Monday. Players have Tuesday off before returning for practice on Wednesday. That’s when we’ll get the first injury report and a good indication of just how close Burton is to returning.
