Trevor Sinclair makes bold Michael Carrick claim after winning start to Man United caretaker role

Trevor Sinclair insists Manchester United should consider appointing Michael Carrick as the club’s interim manager until the end of the season.

Carrick got his caretaker spell in charge of the Red Devils off to the perfect start by guiding them to a 2-0 win over Villarreal on Tuesday, which secured United’s place in the last-16 stage of the Champions League.

The former United midfielder made a huge statement with his team selection by dropping Bruno Fernandes as well as starting Donny van de Beek and Jadon Sancho; neither of whom were given much of an opportunity under former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

His faith in Sancho in particular was rewarded with a first goal in United colours for the 21-year-old winger.

Sinclair, who played alongside Carrick at West Ham believes his former teammate can lead United on an interim basis until a long-term replacement for Solskjaer arrives at Old Trafford.

“Michael Carrick has given them something to think about," he told talkSPORT. “The way that he changed the team, I thought he was quite harsh with certain players which at times as a manager you need to be.

“He dropped Fernandes and Rashford so straight away he looks at the team and thinks ‘this team’s not working.

“He’s brought in Van de Beek, a player that’s really struggled under Ole since his arrival and Sancho, both of them played really well in my opinion.

“I looked at Sancho’s performance last night and thought, he’s playing differently to how he played under Ole.

“I’d never seen the wingers at United go that deep and work that hard for the team. Michael has changed things within the shape of the team.”

Carrick’s credentials as a potential interim boss will receive a stern examination when he takes his side to league leaders Chelsea on Sunday.
