Trevor Clarke sets sights on promotion after joining Bristol Rovers from Rotherham United

Trevor Clarke is targeting promotion after joining Bristol Rovers on a permanent deal from Rotherham United.

The 23-year-old defender has moved to BS7 for an undisclosed fee, signing a one-year contract with a one-year club option.

The former Shamrock Rovers defender is Rovers' ninth signing of the summer and their second of the day, with a loan move for Crystal Palace's Sion Spence announced early on Friday morning.

And in Clarke's first interview, the one-time Republic of Ireland under-21 international made clear he wants to help Rovers get back to League One at the first time of asking under Joey Barton.

"I’m delighted for it to get done and over the line," Clarke told the club's website. "I’m looking forward to getting in with the lads and hitting the ground running, getting pre-season out of the way and looking forward to the league start.

"It probably has only been a week since they showed interest, it hasn’t been too long and the gaffer has rang me and told me about the way he wants to play and what they’re doing as a club, what he expects form his players and what it has in mind for me.

"It didn’t take long to convince me to come here and I’m buzzing to be here now. I want to do as well as I can, hopefully chip in with a few goals and a couple of assists.

"The main aim is getting the club back to where it belongs, getting promoted back up into League One and give it a right go.

"I think we have the right group of lads and the right staff. Everybody here is on the same page and we know what we want to do."

Clarke is predominantly a left-sided defender, but he believes his versatility will prove valuable to his manager.

"I don’t have a preferred position, I can play anywhere from left-back, left wing-back, right-wing, left-wing," he said.

"Whatever the manager wants you to play is where you’re going to play and I don’t mind playing anywhere.

"It’s big to play under him. He’s had a great career and getting the opportunity to play under him is unbelievable."

Clarke's positivity and energy was apparent from his first brief interview, though he remains realistic. Rovers may be among the bookmakers' favourites for promotion, but League Two is going to present many difficult challenges for Barton's squad to overcome.

"It’s not an easy league, it’s going to be tough and there’s going to be a lot of good teams in the league," Clarke said. "But I’m dying to get going and show what I can do as a player.

"Over the past two years I haven’t got much game time but I’m looking to show the fans at Bristol Rovers what I can do and what I’m about."
