Trevor Birch reveals what Swansea City's American owners made of play-off drama and offers telling Steve Cooper praise

Trevor Birch has revealed Swansea City's American owners are "delighted" after seeing their side secure a place in the Championship's play-offs.

The Swans' stunning 4-1 triumph over Reading at the Madejski Stadium along with Nottingham Forest's 4-1 defeat by Stoke City saw Steve Cooper's men leapfrog Sabri Lamouchi's side into the fourth and final top-six place on goal difference in the final minutes of the 2019/20 regular season.

Birch joined in with the celebrations in Berkshire after it was confirmed that Swansea had secured their spot in the play-offs, with Brentford standing in his side's way of the final at Wembley on August 4.

And the chairman has opened up on what Steve Kaplan and Jason Levien - who last attended a Swansea fixture in October - made of the club's incredible achievement.

"They're delighted. I think they're still pinching themselves like everybody really, because it's just a phenomenal achievement," he told Talksport.

"But you've got to go again. It means nothing really at the moment, does it? I think you've got to enjoy the moment and celebrate it because, as they say, there are more lows than highs in this game, so any bit of joy, you need to milk it."

Goals from Rhian Brewster and Liam Cullen along with a second half brace from Wayne Routledge did the trick for Swansea at Reading, with Cooper's men ending the regular season on 70 points, the same tally that Forest achieved.

And Birch admits he's struggling to come to terms with the events that unfolded.

"I'm still in a state of shock. It's unbelievable," he added. "The turnaround in goal difference, you just wouldn't have believed it.

"The effort from the players and the coaches was just phenomenal. The players since we've come back from lockdown, they've just been incredible. Their application is just faultless.

"It's up there with one of my greatest nights. The swing of emotions where we were both 1-1, you're thinking 'that's it'.

"Then when you score a couple and Stoke score a couple, it's just unreal."

Birch was a key figure in the appointment of head coach Cooper, who has led Swansea to a top six finish in what is his first season in senior football management.

And the 62-year-old reserved special praise for the man who guided England's Under-17s to World Cup glory three years ago after what he's achieved in his debut campaign at SA1.

"I'm just so delighted for Steve. It's his first season in league football, and everybody questioned whether a youth coach could manage older players in a league format," he added.

"To me, he's knocked it out of the park. He's been sensational. He's dealt with the older players, the likes of Andre Ayew, Wayne Routledge, Nathan Dyer, these players have seen good coaches in action, and they're full of compliments for Steve.

"There are so many other UK coaches out there who haven't been given an opportunity and just want to have that opportunity. Steve is flying the flag for all those people who are unrecognised."
