We are onto the third prospect in our series breaking down the best comparisons for all of the Ohio State Buckeyes up for the 2021 NFL draft. We have already highlighted Justin Fields and Trey Sermon, but I wanted to talk about a forgotten former Buckeye, Trevon Grimes.
Grimes is a former five-star recruit who enrolled at Ohio State in 2017 and saw time in two games before transfering to Florida. Although he was most recently a Gator, Buckeye fans should still root for Grimes to succeed. Below we highlight the most natural comparison and then try and find a former Ohio State player to compare him to. Like Sermon, Grimes is likely to be a middle-round target.
Player Profile
Name: Trevon Grimes
Position: Wide Receiver
Height: 6-4 (pre pro day)
Weight: 215 pounds
Trevon Grimes has some limitations as a receiver for sure, but hard not to love his mentality. Went into the South Carolina game trying to destroy Jaycee Horn in the run game. Physically challenging him even when the run was going to the opposite side of the field. Competitor.

NEXT … The closest all-around comp to Grimes
All-around Comparison: Allen Lazard
Lazard went undrafted in 2018 despite dominating during his career at Iowa State and signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars. After not making the final cuts with Jacksonville, the Jaguars placed him on their practice squad. He was snatched by the Green Bay Packers where he has been ever since.
Lazard is a similar style player to Grimes, but he was a better prospect coming out of Iowa State. Lazard was a four-year starter, two-time captain and left school as its all-time leading receiver. Grimes really only has one year of statistical significance after not seeing the field much during his first three collegiate seasons.
They do have a few similarities, including their play-making attitude and aggressive style, which has allowed both to succeed in contested catch situations. Both struggle to create separation as well and that no doubt played a huge role in Lazard going undrafted in 2018. He has outplayed that projection though, and that should help Grimes potentially hear his name called.
The Eagles haven’t signed a receiver yet, and obviously they didn’t have the cap to do so. I would consider taking a shot on Allen Lazard. pic.twitter.com/qIy4E6BnPf

NEXT … Best former Ohio State comp
Grimes’ best Buckeye Comparison: Noah Brown
Brown had a few solid highlights during his time as a Buckeye and was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the seventh round of the 2017 draft. He has stuck with Dallas since being drafted, but has not turned into a playmaker.
Grimes is not nearly the prospect Brown was coming out in 2017. Brown has better hands than Grimes, but they do share a few similar traits. Both have unique size that only a few receivers have, and both struggle to gain separation. Although Grimes is not nearly the caliber player as Brown, it would not be surprising to see him selected higher.
Noah Brown is both a serviceable ST player and a serviceable WR.
Kearse is a good ST guy who you don’t want playing defense.
