Trevoh Chalobah responds to taking Chelsea captaincy after transfer U-turn

Trevoh Chalobah says it was an “honour” to captain Chelsea during Wednesday night’s pre-season friendly win over Wrexham.

The defender donned the armband on an interim basis in North Carolina as Mauricio Pochetino began life as Blues manager with a 5-0 victory, with a decision still to be made on who succeeds Cesar Azpilicueta full-time.

Standard Sport understands the club are now reluctant to sell the 24-year-old this summer despite initially being open to sanctioning the Cobham graduate’s exit.

Inter Milan are interested in a move for the defender, who has aims of breaking into the England squad ahead of the European Championships in Germany next year.

Injuries to both Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile, however, have complicated matters.

Pochettino does not want his options at centre-back further depleted, albeit a new signing there is an option.

Chelsea have expressed an interest in Crystal Palace’s £50m-rated Marc Guehi, who left Stamford Bridge for Selhurst Park in 2021 for around £18m.

Speaking to reporters after the win in America, Chalobah said: “Obviously it’s an honour to captain this club, it’s a great experience for me.

“Obviously it happened today and I’ll try not to think too much about it but obviously playing with a young squad out there I tried the younger players and we got the win so that’s good."
