Trevoh Chalobah proves loan system works as Thomas Tuchel solves Chelsea's centre-back problem

Trevoh Chalobah and Thiago Silva have been ranked as the Premier League's top two leading centre-halves heading into the international break, according to football database WhoScored.

The former England youth international leads the charts with a 7.64 average rating over four fixtures as Thomas Tuchel hatches another golden egg from the Cobham training ground, a testament to Chelsea's world-famed incubation of exciting talent.

Silva trails, ranking as the second-best centre-half in the league to have played at least four games this season as the veteran defender takes Chalobah under his wing.

Brighton's Shane Duffy etches himself into the top three with an average rating of 7.44, ranking the trio above the likes of Virgil van Dijk (7.17) and Ruben Dias (7.14).

Chalobah's gold medal leading into the international break is credit to the 22-year-old's perseverance and trust in his childhood side's loan system.

Chelsea's newest emerging star endured three tough, but successful, loan spells at Ipswich, Huddersfield and Lorient which would ready the versatile defender for a starring role under Tuchel.

The Blues' number fourteen operated across five different positions throughout his loan spells, featuring as a centre-half, a six, an eight, left-back and right-back.

Each of the different roles he utilised, supplied him with different skillset credentials to not only impress but prosper under Tuchel.

An ability to distribute forward passes while under pressure, the spatial awareness in and out of possession as well as the mental composure to avoid emotional impulses are all attributes typically gained from over 100 valuable senior appearances.

Incorporate the natural off-field psychological demands of emerging into the public eye and uprooting 'home' every season, the combination of Chalobah's experience in the loan network at Chelsea moulded him into a defender that Tuchel has been blown away by.

"I spoke to the manager between the Palace and Arsenal games and he told me he wanted me to stay, so I moved over to the first-team building that week," Chalobah told Chelsea FC.

"It was a nice feeling when the manager told me. He spoke to me after training and told me how well I’d done, that I’d taken my chance in pre-season and in the games.

"He said he thinks I can be a good asset to the team and learn from the other players and support them."

The Blues were reportedly in the market for a new centre-back over the summer but Chalobah's prevalence proved to Tuchel why the west Londoners don't need to invest in such an asset.

With Antonio Rudiger's contract conundrum still at large, the Chelsea boss can now eye the young Englishman once again as a short-term ploy to plug a defensive gap should one emerge following the saga.

Chalobah has predominantly operated as a right-sided centre-half for Chelsea this season, but as Rudiger has shown as a right-footed player, the Cobham graduate would be more than capable of flaunting his worth there too.

Speaking on his versatility, Tuchel said: "We know this. For us, so far he only played in the back three. Right now this is the positions, the three, where he can achieve the most on a high level of football."
