Trent Williams being traded to 49ers is ironic in so many ways

Trent Williams is gone, and the Washington Redskins are officially starting fresh going into the 2020 season.

It was a whirlwind of breaking news for the Redskins as Day 3 of the 2020 NFL Draft got underway, with reports coming out that the Redskins traded veteran LT Trent Williams at long last, sending him to the San Francisco 49ers for a 5th round pick in 2020, as well as a 3rd round pick in 2021. It may not have been what Washington initially wanted as far as compensation goes, but it was the best they could get at this point.

An interesting note on the trade is that Williams doesn’t have a contract extension in place with the 49ers as of yet, and he is currently slotted to play the 2020 season on his current deal. This means that all of that holding out he did in 2019? Yea, that was all for nothing.

Another interesting note is the landing spot, under former Redskins OC Kyle Shanahan in San Fran. The Redskins’ willingness to send Williams to the 49ers shows how much of a grown-up Ron Rivera is, not letting past grudges get the best of him. Bruce Allen could never.

In all of this craziness, it’s important to take a step back and remember two things. Bruce Allen is gone, and Trent Williams is gone. A fresh start is upon us. Take a deep breath and trust in Ron Rivera.
