Trent Williams absent from first day of mandatory minicamp

NFL Minicamp is now underway for the Washington Redskins, but one key piece on the offensive line is nowhere to be found.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, LT Trent Williams was not present at the start of sessions on Tuesday. This section of offseason workouts is mandatory for players, as opposed to the voluntary OTAs that have taken place the past couple of weeks.

Rapoport says that Williams is looking to sign a new deal with the Redskins.

Williams, who was drafted with the No. 4 pick in 2010, is expected to receive $11 million in base salary for the 2019 season, with one year, $12.5M left on his contract in 2020. In 2021, under his current contract, he would become an unrestricted free agent at age 33.

The veteran LT missed the end of the 2018 season with a thumb injury, holding him out of three games. He also is recovering from a serious health scare, where doctors found a growth on his head that they feared was malignant. The growth was removed and Williams was given the nod to eventually return to the field.

At this point in time, the Redskins can not afford to lose a mainstay on the offensive line like Williams. His experience and leadership are paramount, and he is a crucial cog in the team’s hopeful success. If Washington wants to continue forward into a winning season, they need to get the situation with Williams figured out, as soon as possible.
