Trent Brown mum on whether return to Patriots is likely

Trent Brown was predictably terse when quizzed about his free agency prospects. The New England Patriots left tackle is set to enter unrestricted free agency at the expiration of his contract in March.

During a recent appearance on “The Adam Schefter Podcast,” Brown fielded a question about whether he’ll be returning to New England.

“That’s definitely something that I would love, but we’ll cross that bridge when we get there,” Brown told Schefter.

Brown also said that he didn’t know if the Patriots would consider placing the franchise tag or transition tag on him prior to the deadline. The left tackle also said he hadn’t heard any formal pitches from Patriots players to convince him not to walk in free agency.

Brown joined the Patriots in 2018 when New England traded a third-round pick to acquire him from the San Francisco 49ers. They also drafted tackle Isaiah Wynn, who tore his Achilles in the preseason and missed the entire year.

The Patriots’ recent history shows they aren’t afraid to let a starting caliber left tackle walk. In 2018, they replaced Nate Solder, who signed with the New York Giants in free agency. Perhaps they’ll have to replace Brown with Wynn in 2019.
