NEW DELHI: New Zealand captain Kane Williamson expressed his admiration for Trent Boult, the departing left-arm fast bowler, on Monday. Williamson acknowledged Boult's significant contributions to both New Zealand and international cricket, emphasising his enduring legacy as a remarkable player.
In his final T20 World Cup appearance for New Zealand, Boult showcased his exceptional skills against Papua New Guinea in Tarouba, Trinidad and Tobago.
The pacer delivered an impressive spell, conceding only 14 runs in his four overs while claiming two wickets. Despite the Kiwis' victory by seven wickets, their journey in the tournament came to an end.
"I think after every tournament there's a bit of reflection, this being Trent's last ICC tournament, great servant of our game and the world game," Williamson was quoted as saying by PTI, after New Zealand's final match after failing to make it to the Super Eight round of the tournament.
"(It is) sad to see him go but that's the nature of playing for a long time. As a guy, he's got such a big appetite to keep getting better, trains hard, (he is) very fit, and very clear with how he wants to operate," he said. "(Boult) held himself in great stead across formats. (He) sticks his chest out and performs well. (He has made) a fantastic contribution and has created the space for new players to come in," Williamson added.
Boult, at the age of 34, has represented New Zealand in 61 T20Is. Throughout his career, he has claimed an impressive 83 wickets in this format.
In the T20 World Cup, Boult has been a standout performer, featuring in 18 matches. The left-arm pacer grabbed 34 wickets at 12.50 with an economy under six an over.
