Trent Alexander-Arnold ruled out of Liverpool vs Manchester City with return date given

Jurgen Klopp expects to have Trent Alexander-Arnold and Thiago Alcantara available after the international break.

The pair will miss this Sunday's Premier League clash with Manchester City and won't feature for their national teams during the October international break.

Alexander-Arnold was left out of Gareth Southgate's squad for England's World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Hungary, while Thiago will also miss Spain's Nations League semi-final against Italy next Wednesday.

Klopp is hopeful neither will face a lengthy spell on the sidelines, however.

“No,” the boss told the club website on Thursday, when asked if there was an update regarding their fitness.

“No ‘news’ means they are doing well but they won’t have enough time for being back against City, but I expect them both to be back after the international break.

“But we have a good team so we still have solutions and we have to use them and yeah, after the international break the boys will be back I think.”

Thiago was substituted shortly after the 60 minute mark in Liverpool's victory over Crystal Palace earlier this month and a calf injury has kept him out of action ever since.

Alexander-Arnold trained earlier this week but was ruled out of the Reds' trip to Portugal with a groin problem.

He missed Tuesday night's thrashing of Porto in the Champions League and James Milner was tasked with filling his boots for the second time this season.

The right-back missed the visit of Crystal Palace through illness, but was available for the 3-3 draw against Brentford last weekend.

Klopp now faces a selection headache against City on Sunday with Milner or Joe Gomez the likely options to step in.
