Trent Alexander-Arnold ruled out of Euro 2020 as Liverpool defender's injury lay-off confirmed

Trent Alexander-Arnold will miss Euro 2020 after injuring his thigh against Austria on Wednesday night.

The Liverpool defender pulled up in the last minutes of England's friendly win at the Riverside Stadium, and was in visible discomfort when limping down the tunnel.

Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate confirmed the 22-year-old had injured his thigh when speaking after the match but wanted to wait for further scans before confirming whether the right-back would be withdrawn from his squad.

And a scan on Thursday has confirmed that Alexander-Arnold has suffered a grade two quad tear and is now set for a recovery period of four to six weeks.

The full-back had impressed against the Austrians, having been included in Southgate's 26-man squad for Euro 2020 despite widespread speculation before the announcement that he would miss out due to competition from Kyle Walker, Kieran Trippier and Reece James.

But he will now say his goodbyes to his England team-mates and depart the squad’s camp in Middlesbrough on Thursday night, and start focusing on his rehabilitation in time for Liverpool's return to pre-season training on Monday 12 July.

Southgate will now name a replacement for Alexander-Arnold but will delay the decision until after Sunday’s warm-up fixture against Romania, with Jesse Lingard, James Ward-Prowse, Ollie Watkins, Aaron Ramsdale, Ben Godfrey and Ben White the players vying to step up, having initially been named in England's provisional 33-man squad.
