'That's all we ask' - Trent Alexander-Arnold sends message to two 'dream' Liverpool signings

Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold has expressed his excitement over the arrival of Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai - describing the duo as "dream players".

The Reds have moved quickly to bolster their midfield options following the departures of James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita after the expiry of their contracts.

Jurgen Klopp highlighted Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Mac Allister as a target before the conclusion of the season as his £35m release clause was triggered at the beginning of June. A month later, the RB Leipzig star and Hungary captain, Szoboszlai, was added to the squad after becoming the fourth most expensive Reds arrival.

Liverpool triggered his £60m release clause at the end of last month just hours before it was due to expire at midnight on June 30. The 22-year-old was the second summer arrival as part of the midfield reinforcements - and Alexander-Arnold says it's an exciting time for the club.

"Top players, exciting for the club, exciting for the team," he told Sky Sports. "It is always exciting when we sign new players to see how they come and how they adapt and what they're like.

"[I'm] sure they already know, you can see from the outside, we're a welcoming team, a good dressing room, just come in, do your work and get results - that's all we ask.

"We ask for players to buy in to what we do, buy into the plan and be willing to work hard and sacrifice for the team. I'm sure the lads will do that, they're technically excellent players who can receive the ball and play with the ball. For players like me who enjoy passing the ball, they're dream players."

The 24-year-old will return to the AXA Training Centre on Tuesday (July 11) with a number of fellow internationals as they embark on their pre-season preparations. Liverpool will kick off their Premier League campaign away at Chelsea as the Londoners start life under Mauricio Pochettino.

Last season was a forgettable one for the Reds and Klopp after a number of high points during his tenure in the Anfield dugout. With a disappointing Champions League exit and domestic cup performances, Liverpool salvaged a fifth-place finish after a tough start to the season.

Hopes of European football looked bleak at the turn of the year when they were handed a series of chastening defeats to Brentford, Brighton and Wolves. But they enjoyed a resurgence and fired themselves into the top-four conversation before settling for Europa League football.

They finished 22 points behind eventual champions Manchester City and Alexander-Arnold says the Reds already have the blueprint to challenge Pep Guardiola's treble winners as they to better last season's showing.

"I think as a club it's necessary to be honest. You know, we do respect every competition we play in but if you'd asked us this time last year, would you want to finish fifth, we'd have all said no and same again now," he continued.

"Would we want to finish fifth next season? No. We want to be winning the league, we want to be challenging and being in title races and in Champions League football so to not be in that next season is disappointing.

"We know how to win the league, we know how to challenge City and go toe to toe with them and you need to be near perfect throughout the season so for us that's where our heads are at."
