Trent Alexander-Arnold opens up on pressure not to fail in race equality battle

Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold admits he would deem it a failure if he wasn't able to positively affect the battle for racial equality.

The Black Lives Matter movement has been hugely visible as the Premier League returns following a three month break.

Players have all taken a knee before matches and had Black Lives Matter printed on the back of their shirts in place of their names.

Alexander-Arnold will have the chance to play his part when Liverpool play Everton in the Merseyside derby on Sunday evening.

But with his stock always rising he confessed that using his platform to make a difference, especially on social media, is a huge goal.

He said on BT Sport : "Maybe I put pressure on myself because I know that's the right thing to do. I know its something I believe in.

"I know I've got a big platform and I know a lot of kids look up to me.

"It is not just about being a role model on th pitch. I want to be someone who feels as though they've made a change. I've made a change in the way people think.

"If at the end of my career I haven't done that then I'd see that as a failure on my behalf."

The Liverpool star wants to see more diversity in the boardroom (PA)

The lack of diversity in influential positions within football has been a major talking point.

And the 21-year-old has spoken about the differing approaches taken to recruitment on the pitch and off it.

He added: "I think within the system there's not enough equality. For that to change we need more people in the boardroom.

"We need equality in physios, kitmen all the way up to the boardroom. We need everyone to have an opportunity.

"When you're looking at transfer target you don;t care what colour they are. You're looking based on what talent have they got.

"I don't think that's the thought process for more powerful positions within football.

"It feels as though whoever is making the decisions at the top, on purpose or not, race does come their thought process."
