Trent Alexander-Arnold on Jurgen Klopp's motivation and why Dejan Lovren is the perfect Liverpool example

Trent Alexander-Arnold has claimed Jurgen Klopp's motivation has been the driving force behind Liverpool's consistency in the Premier League this season.

The league leaders have won 10 of their 11 games this term and currently hold a six-point advantage over Manchester City, who the Reds will meet at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.

Only a 1-1 draw at Manchester United denied the European champions of the perfect domestic campaign so far and Alexander-Arnold says his manager's high standards have been crucial to maintaining that excellent run of form.

The England international was given his Liverpool debut by Klopp in January 2017 and passed his 100-game milestone in last week's 2-1 win at Aston Villa. And the West Derby-born defender says the German's way of working ensures that the whole squad stay determined throughout the campaign.

Alexander-Arnold told the ECHO: "He is someone who motivates everyone that is around. He is someone you want to play for, someone you feel as though you need to perform for.

"Especially with the way that the squad is now, you need to perform week in, week out to keep your place. He keeps that mentality within the squad and we never settle for what we have or the success we have had so far.

"There is a determination in this squad to get better and improve and achieve more."

Alexander-Arnold cited Dejan Lovren as the perfect example of a Liverpool player maintaining a high level of form to take a chance in Klopp's side when the opportunity presents itself.

Lovren was limited to just 15 starts in all competitions last term and was behind Joe Gomez and Joel Matip in the pecking order before returning to the team to start four of the last six games.

"When you aren't playing, it is difficult because you feel the manager has his XI and there is not a lot you can do to get into it," he added.

"But, opportunities will come and the biggest example of that is probably Dejan at the minute. He was probably not playing as much as he wanted last season and was disappointed and the start of this season.

"It was the same again but he was given his chance and he has taken it. He is performing really well and helping us get points.

"He is a great example for all lads who are not playing as much as they want to and they have to be ready for the opportunity because when it comes, they have to take it."
