Gary Neville suspects Trent Alexander-Arnold and Fabinho "mixed up" who should be marking who in Liverpool's defeat by Manchester City.
The Reds have been operating with a makeshift defence in recent months as they have been hit very hard with injuries this season.
Midfielder Fabinho has been filling in at centre-back, and was tasked with helping right-back Alexander-Arnold mark Raheem Sterling on Sunday.
But Sterling continually got the better of both players at Anfield, and Neville, who played right-back himself, suspected the duo "mixed up" who should be marking the forward.
England international Alexander-Arnold is one of Liverpool's brightest talents, but he hasn't been at his best this season.
Alexander-Arnold was recently asked about his form in an interview with Sky Sports, and admitted he's not been at his best.
"Me? No. There's been times this season I felt like I've been playing quite well," he said.
"Recently I've been trying to get back into that rhythm I was talking about earlier from a personal point of view.
"It's been a tough reason in that respect in just trying to find that rhythm and get back into it and just letting things happen naturally. It's been quite difficult.
"But again there's no excuses. I want to try to make things happen for the team and perform as well as I can to help us win games and that's what I'm trying to do."
