Trent Alexander-Arnold makes admission over famous Liverpool corner vs Barcelona

Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold has admitted he was not the intended taker of the famous corner that resulted in Divock Origi's goal against Barcelona in 2019.

The Reds faced a mammoth task at Anfield to reach the Champions League final after losing the first-leg 3-0 at the Camp Nou.

Origi opened the scoring for Liverpool with substitute Gini Wijnaldum scoring twice after the interval to level the score line on aggregate.

After winning Liverpool a corner, Alexander-Arnold appeared to walk away before spotting Origi amid a cluster of Barcelona defenders whose attention was elsewhere.

His cross resulted in one of the most famous goals in Liverpool's history as Jurgen Klopp's side would go on to win the game and secure their sixth European Cup in Madrid.

Now, the Liverpool defender has admitted he was not the intended taker of that corner.

"It just happened," he told LFCTV. "We never trained it. I wasn't really even meant to take the corner.

"It wasn't a routine. I wasn't playing a trick. I was actually walking away because I was meant to stand somewhere else.

"All the Barcelona players were not concentrating and weren't looking at the ball, it just fell into place. It was an unbelievable goal."

Alexander-Arnold named two local legends in Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher as his inspirations when discussing his rise through the academy with ten competition winners.

He added: "I always looked up to Gerrard, Carragher, them sort of players.

"They inspired me and motivated me and showed me it was possible for a normal kid.

"A kid coming from a normal area, with normal friends, normal family and to be able to achieve so much."
