Gareth Southgate admitted that Trent Alexander-Arnold’s injury was “not a good sign” for England with the Liverpool right-back now a major doubt for the European Championship.
Alexander-Arnold gave England an huge injury scare barely a week before the Euros begins by hobbling off with a suspected left hamstring injury in Wednesday’s 1-0 warm-up friendly win over Austria.
The Liverpool right-back sustained what looked to be a hamstring injury just before full-time while clearing the ball with his left foot near the touchline, with no Austria player near him at the Riverside Stadium.
Alexander-Arnold immediately signalled to the bench come off, and ended up being helped around the perimeter of the field by a member of England's medical staff.
He was one of four right-backs selected by Southgate in the 26-man squad for Euro 2020, so the team does have plenty of cover if Alexander-Arnold is ruled out.
Following the match, Southgate stated that it appeared to be a thigh problem rather than a hamstring injury for Alexander-Arnold, but refused to be drawn on the defender’s immediate chances of making it to the Euros.
Southgate told ITV: “We are going to have a little look. It’s not good to see him come off in the way he did.
“I think it’s a thigh (problem) but the medical team are still assessing him. We just have to see. It’s not a good sign to see him walk off as he did. We will know more in the next 24 or 48 hours.”
